Overview

Madelaine Kramer Katz is a member of the firm’s Complex Civil and Commercial Litigation, Class Action Litigation and False Claims Act Litigation practice groups.  She focuses her practice on cases involving complex and unique procedural and evidentiary issues and is well-versed in litigating matters involving personal injury, product liability, premises liability, professional liability, sanctions, community associations, property disputes, contract disputes, fraud, estates, toxic tort, employment, insurance coverage, appeals, and appellate practice.  Her experience practicing in state and federal courts in all three jurisdictions of Maryland, D.C., and Virginia helps her dissect and understand opposing counsel’s strategy and position cases for a favorable outcome.

Madelaine is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association, Bar Association of Montgomery County, Maryland, D.C. Bar Association, Virginia Bar Association (“VBA”), Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys (“VADA”), Fairfax Bar Association, and Northern Virginia Estate Planning Council.  She served as the chair of the VBA, Young Lawyers Division, and on the VBA’s Board of Governors from 2020-2021, and currently serves on the Board of Directors for VADA, having been a past chair of its Products & Toxic Torts section.

  • Judgment awarded in favor of client on all claims asserted by prisoner, decision reported at 2021 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 4805 (D. Md. 2021)
  • Successfully litigated lease termination dispute and attorneys’ fees claims, securing grant of plaintiff’s motion for summary judgment, decision reported at 436 F. Supp. 3d 17 (D.D.C. 2020)
  • Successfully represented respondents in opposing petition for a writ of certiorari to the U.S. Supreme Court, reported at 141 S. Ct. 354 (2020)
  • Obtained dismissal of legal and professional malpractice, breach of fiduciary, and fraud claims via Rule 12(b)(6) motions to dismiss, decision reported at  2019 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 231536 (E.D. Va. 2019)
  • Attained dismissal of malpractice and other tort claims via Rule 12(b) motions to dismiss (D.C. Sup. Ct. 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021).
  • Successfully obtained summary disposition on numerous fraud and VCPA claims in Arbitration proceedings
  • Successfully obtained a defense verdict in Dunn v. Altemus (Fairfax County Cir. Ct. Va. 2019), a radiation oncology malpractice suit, following an eight-day jury trial
  • Defense verdict affirmed on appeal in Williams v. Swenson (Va. Sup. Ct. 2018)
  • Obtained dismissal of petition for appeal in Brady v. Albrigo (Va. Sup. Ct. 2018) following dismissal of underlying claims
  • Obtained dismissal of complex motions for sanctions (Fairfax County Cir. Ct. Va. 2018)
  • Successfully obtained a defense verdict in Miller v. Davis (Baltimore County Cir. Ct. Md. 2017), a neurosurgery malpractice suit, following a six-day jury trial
  • Achieved dismissal with prejudice on demurrer, and pleas in bar based on statute of limitations defenses and failure to comply with expert witness certifications in various Virginia matters
  • Obtained favorable outcomes for clients before the Virginia Board of Medicine
